Here follows the Ronald Zee's contribution to the Eddy Gustave - Eddy'Son discography to be edited upon my return from a few autumnal travels./LF 2005.09.26

Eddy Gustave was in my opinion the best producer of the 80s, his releases always had a clear, transparant and spatial sound, with all the instruments clearly audible. Here is a small discography, not all the lp's were produced by him, 4 or 5 were licensed to him. I think most lp's were released between 1980 - 1985 /Ronald Zee

DAVID - I was puzzled by the titles of your Passy-Jo album (Sonics 79424).
But now I see you mixed them up with the titles of the Mimi Kazidona LP (Sonics 79435).
Anyway, that Passy-Jo album is a favorite. The way that Syran and Rigo play together, especially on 'Bobotaka', great stuff.

I figured it out. The sticker on the LP has the names of the songs wrong. It is marked as the correct record, but lists the Mimi Kazidona songs.
Not the first time!

David

No problem, I did not know about the Gerard Kimbolo and Jimmy/Fredo albums. When I started buying Congolese music there were Eddy Gustave releases every couple of months and then around 1986 it suddenly dried up, I wonder what happened to him.

RONALD - Sonics became Saxone Music and then (I think) Gustave sold his business to Karac (A. Apatout). Karac released a few CDs in 1993 but nothing since.

Coming from the Caribbean, Eddy Gustave of course also recorded Zouk Music. Here are some albums that were released on his labels.

KADANCE label:

Thimothey Herelle - K 4243
Thimothey Herelle - K 4246
Lazair - K 4248
Thomothey Herelle - K 4250
Lazair - K 4254
Satelyte - K 4255
Ultim Atom - K 4256
Lazair - K 4260

Disques Sonics:

Medley Super Groupage - 79431
Lazair - S 1826

The Satelyte and Ultim Atom albums are solo albums by Zouk guitarist/singer Dominique Gengoul, who was a member of the Zouk All Stars and Lazair. I do like these albums very much, they are Dominique's interpretation of Soukous, on the Satelyte album vocals are provided by Ballou Canta and Aurlus Mabele and on the Ultim Atom album Lea Lignanzi sings and Komba Bellow plays drums.

I have a few songs from the Satellite album on analog tapes, with no track titles (from my times of DJeing). Whose female voice is it on that song that goes like "Malembe, malembe" in the chorus? Technically speaking, Gengoul is in my opinion the best guitarist who ever came from the Caribbean, although Desvarieux outwits him in conceptual vision. Desvarieux managed to introduce all guitar sounds in zouk (from acoustic to distorted rock) without distorting his music. If I'm not mistaken he also played in an African (or mixed) setting on a song called (I suppose) "Getto a Liso" with Kanda Bongo Man on the vocals, a session which also featured bassist Michel Alibo who teamed with Gengoul to form Lazair, incorporating susbtantial African elements in their creations. Actually, when I listen to Alibo, playing in African contexts, I wonder if Benga bassists haven't given him something of an influence. An American jazz guitarist, who happens to have played palm wine guitar in West Africa for sometime, asked me once if Satellite was on CD. Is it?

Yes!
He plays sax. You can hear a good long section of his work on the "Zenaba" LP of Theo Blaise.

Venantius

The tracks on the Satelyte album are:
Nabozo-Le Loto-Malembe-Legitime Defense-Agent Payeur

Auteur/compositeurs: Eddy Gustave/Dominique Gengoul
Dominique Gengoul : Guitare solo, accomp.,program rythmique
Ringo Stars : Percussions
Dany,Victoire,Etisomba Lokindji, D Gengoul, E Gustave, B Canta, A Mabele and Jean Luc Alger : Vocals

The song Guetho A Liso is from an lp called Zouk Time, there were I think 4 or 5 albums released with that title.

On the Super Groupage album Eddy is not only one of the vocalists, but also plays Sax. The album is a medley of Caribbean and African songs. The African songs are : Georgette Eckin's-Liyanzi Ekoti Ngai Ma Motema (Musy)-Ami Oh.
The musicians on that album are:
Rigo Star-Balou Canta-Passy Jo-Pirate-Du Soleil-Rachel Tchoungui-Frederic Tete-Jimmy Mvondo-Roland Rascar-Georges Happy-Pierre Letchoumayen-Georgette Achamana
